Community Transition Specialist

HANDS in Autism® is seeking an individual with particular interest and/or experience assessing, planning, and providing for school and transition-age youth and adults with ASD and related disabilities. Interested individuals may come from diverse but relevant backgrounds such as education, psychology, and clinical social work.

  • Provide consultation to individuals, families, and providers regarding appropriate and effective academic, vocational, and functional programming within home and community settings.
  • Assist in the development, preparation, and implementation of outreach training provided within the context of the HANDS in Autism® program.
  • Assist with disseminating basic educational materials and research literature to help educate caregivers/staff/professionals.
  • Provide innovation in service delivery with the development of workshops responsive to the expressed needs of the community and state.

To be successful, candidates should have:

  • Theoretical understanding and philosophical appreciation for team and community interventions
  • Ability to work as a team player
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, parents, providers, employers, and other consumers
  • Ability to present professionally, maintain accurate and organized records, and be able to work with minimal supervision or feedback
  • Be able to deal with difficult clients/families/consumers and handle stress in meeting deadlines and carrying out responsibilities

Transition Specialist

The Transition Specialist at HANDS in Autism® will provide direct service, consultation, and support to individuals, families, providers, and student mentors within the HANDSmade™ Program at HANDS in Autism®. The specialist will carry out transition-related assessment and intervention services with a team of experts in the field of autism spectrum disorder as well as other social, communication, and behavioral disorders. Consultation, training, follow-up, and other services will be provided at the center as well as in school, work, and community settings. The specialist will also provide basic resources and learning materials to consumers, caregivers, and providers, create tools utilized to support the implementation of evidence-based practices, and assist in data-driven processes, student training activities, and ongoing workshops and trainings for a range of consumers.

Individuals with an interest in and possessing a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in special education, education, psychology, mental health, or a related field, as well as experience working with individuals of transition age, are required. Preference is given to those with a Master’s Degree in the health or education field, experience working with individuals with autism spectrum disorder and/or related neurodevelopmental disabilities at the secondary and/or postsecondary level, and related licensure (e.g., LMHC, LCSW, licensure in special education).
