Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face daily challenges. Being aware of ASD characteristics and using simple strategies can significantly improve your interactions and increase compliance. Explore resources below and scroll down for extra strategies!
Strategies to Practice:
USE:
- Simple and concrete sentences
- Visually presented instructions to cue expectations
- Body to block harmful behaviors
ASK:
- Caregiver(s) about specific tips and/or considerations for the individual with ASD
GIVE:
- Options when possible
- Extra time for processing
- Praise for appropriate actions
AVOID:
- Physical contact if not needed
- Reprimands of undesirable behaviors
- Talking about individuals in their presence
ALLOW:
- Choices of how to complete the requested action
- Extra time for processing
