We are happy to share that HANDS in Autism® is available as a Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) vendor consultant and specialty support service provider to assist individuals and families navigating the path to meaningful employment. Whether you're just beginning your vocational journey or need extra support along the way, HANDS is here to help.
What Is Vocational Rehabilitation?
Vocational Rehabilitation is a state-supported program designed to help individuals with disabilities prepare for, obtain, and maintain employment. If you or a loved one is facing challenges in securing or sustaining a job, you may be eligible for VR services. The process begins with an application, followed by an assessment to determine eligibility. Once approved, you’ll work with a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRC) to develop an Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE) tailored to your goals and needs.
How HANDS in Autism® Supports VR Participants
HANDS can be included in your IPE to provide specialized services that support your employment journey. While HANDS specializes in autism and related disabilities, our team has extensive experience working across a wide range of special needs, functional levels, settings, and age groups.
Here are some ways HANDS may support you:
- Evaluation & Job/Work Readiness: If you don’t qualify for behaviorist services, HANDS can provide coaching and support to build essential job skills.
- Community-Based Support: If you're struggling to maintain employment, HANDS can consult with both you and your provider to identify and address challenges.
- Ongoing Support: Even after securing a job, HANDS may continue to support you through VR services to ensure a successful transition into your role.
What to Expect
- Eligibility: You must meet VR criteria, including a desire to work and having a provider in place.
- Discovery & Assessment: If needed, the VRC may initiate assessments, potentially involving HANDS to explore your skills and goals more deeply.
- Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE): Your IPE will reflect your unique goals. If additional needs arise, HANDS may be added to your plan.
- Supportive Employment: VR services typically conclude within 90 days of stable employment, but support may continue for up to two years depending on your IPE.
Getting Started
To begin, a referral for VR services must be made. Once eligibility is confirmed, your VRC will guide you through the next steps, including the development of your IPE. If additional services are needed, VR may refer you to HANDS for targeted support. After VR services conclude, individuals may explore alternative funding options to continue working with HANDS.
