As a special needs parent, advocate, and regular HANDS in Autism® collaborator, Itarah brings compassion, knowledge, and lived experience to every space she enters. Her widely shared guide, Autism on the Go, offers practical strategies for families traveling with loved ones with ASD—emphasizing the importance of advance planning, sensory accommodations, visual supports, and caregiver self-care (redtreehouse.org).
When frequent trips for her son LJ’s medical care brought them to Akron, Itarah found the Ronald McDonald House to be more than just lodging—it was a lifeline. “As soon as we walked in the door it felt like we were in a safe place. For a moment, I could just breathe,” she shared. The House provided meals, laundry services, and accessible spaces, allowing her to focus solely on LJ’s needs (rmhcneo.org). Always thinking of others, Itarah even created signs for their room door to help staff and other families better understand LJ’s sensory sensitivities.
Itarah has also been a valued contributor to numerous HANDS in Autism® ECHO webinar panels, where she shares her perspective as both a parent and advocate. Her insights help professionals and families alike understand the real-world impact of policy, care practices, and educational strategies. Deeply rooted in her love for her son, Itarah’s advocacy reminds us that when families are empowered and supported, children with ASD can thrive—wherever life takes them.
